How Sweet It Is by Sam Orndorff

How pure is the sugar?
refine
Sugar

the only thing
that should
come to mind
is the slave trade

refuge, promise
burn
families

baby alligator bait
poetry masters
steeped wrong, suffocate
“you’re like a rose”

You look like
one
of
us

captured in ships
blond yawn
whites eat alligator
you are what you

savagery, only
thing
changed
is

boat now metal
Saccharum officinarum
brown not down
open veins value added
